Transportation
Over the next three years, Fuquay-Varina will complete its $63-million transportation improvement plan, which includes 18 projects to improve traffic flow and safety. Several key improvements are planned for the upcoming fiscal year, including intersection upgrades at Old Honeycutt Road and Highway 55; Old Honeycutt Road and Kennebec Road; and at Bass Lake Road, Sunset Lake Road and Hilltop Needmore Road. The Phase 2 widening of Sunset Lake Road is also slated to begin. Learn more about Fuquay-Varina’s Transportation Projects and view the complete list at DriveFV.org.
Water & Wastewater
Fuquay-Varina is securing its water future with significant infrastructure investments. Thanks to our regional partnership to expand the Sanford Water Filtration Plant, a new water source is currently under construction, which will provide 6 million gallons per day of safe, reliable drinking water to the Town of Fuquay-Varina. This project broke ground last fall and is expected to be completed in 2029. The Town is also partnering with Holly Springs to build a 14-mile water conveyance line from the Sanford Water Plant, with bids being accepted this fall and completion expected in 2028.
The $44 million expansion of the Harnett County Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant is underway, increasing our Cape Fear River Basin treatment capacity from 2.6 to 6 million gallons per day. Construction to double the capacity of the Terrible Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant from 3 to 6 million gallons daily has begun and is expected to be completed in 2027. The Town is also finalizing a new 1-million-gallon elevated water storage tank design, with bidding scheduled for summer 2025. In our recent community survey, citizens indicated that water pressure is a priority, and this tank will increase the average pressure by 22 PSI in the area west of Sunset Lake Road and north of Hwy 42.
Community Survey Shows Continued Satisfaction in Fuquay-Varina
A recently released community survey conducted by ETC Institute paints a compelling picture of Fuquay-Varina as a community that residents are proud to call home. The results demonstrate a town that consistently delivers high-quality services and fosters a strong sense of community.
The town surpassed regional and national service benchmarks, earning the prestigious “Leading the Way Award” for being in the top 10% of U.S. local governments. This honor is based on service quality, customer service, and value for taxpayer dollars. Fuquay-Varina’s ratings exceeded the national average in 47 out of 51 areas, with 27 of those areas exceeding the average by more than 20%. This is the second community survey administered in Fuquay-Varina.
Key strengths include a strong sense of community (89% of respondents rated Fuquay-Varina as an “Excellent” or “Good” place to live), a welcoming environment (76% feel Fuquay-Varina is a welcoming and inclusive community, and 69% believe it’s a good place for seniors), exceptional service (satisfaction levels in Fuquay-Varina are 41% higher than the U.S. average), and a safe place to live (93% feel safe in Fuquay-Varina and a majority expressed satisfaction with the effectiveness of both police and fire services).
Identified areas for improvement include water, sewer, and stormwater services; traffic management and growth planning; and parks and greenways. The Town is committed to addressing these concerns, with 18 upcoming transportation projects and $300 million allocated to water and wastewater improvements. These investments lay the groundwork for long-term growth, economic development, and an even higher quality of life for residents.

Fuquay-Varina Police Achieve CALEA Accreditation
This spring, the Fuquay-Varina Police Department achieved Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) accreditation, a significant milestone recognized as the gold standard in public safety. This achievement places the department among just 1,310 agencies worldwide.
The rigorous accreditation process, which took 18 months of dedicated effort from the entire department staff, culminated in a unanimous vote of approval from the CALEA commission. “The CALEA accreditation reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence in the services we provide to our community,” said Police Chief Tim Smith. “It’s a direct result of every team member’s hard work and dedication.”
The FVPD is also working towards North Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (NCLEA), further solidifying their dedication to excellence.
Four New Fire Trucks Placed in Service
Four new Spartan Emergency Response fire engines have joined the Town’s fleet, marking a significant investment in public and firefighter safety. These custom-built engines took two years to build and were welcomed into service in April during a traditional “push-in” service attended by several hundred community members.
This $3.89 million investment, partially funded by a $856,000 grant from the North Carolina General Assembly, represents the first time in the town’s history that four new fire engines have been added simultaneously. The modern apparatus, capable of carrying up to four firefighters and 1,000 gallons of water, replaces aging vehicles and incorporates several key safety features. These include a lower hose bed to minimize firefighter injuries, a dedicated turnout gear compartment to reduce carcinogen exposure, and an automatic engine shutdown system to conserve fuel and reduce exhaust fumes. The Town is committed to providing our firefighters with the best possible equipment and ensuring the safety of our community.
