The field of flags. Every year, you probably drive by a field of American flags beautifully arranged in an open area in Fuquay-Varina. The sight is one to behold. I don’t know about you, but seeing a large display of flags like that just warms my heart.
What’s it all for? What does it represent?
A few years ago, the Fuquay-Varina Rotary clubs decided that this would be a great thing for the community. The concept is simple. Businesses and individuals in the community can sponsor one flag or multiple flags.
The flags are there to honor loved ones and friends. Some who are still with us, and some who are not. The majority of the sponsorships have a military connection. The flags are put in place prior to a Memorial Day ceremony, which will be held this year on May 26, and remain on display until July 5.
This year, for the first time, the flags will be on display in front of the new fire station at the corner of Highway 55 and Wade Nash Road.
This event is open to the public, and likely the most photographed display in Fuquay-Varina. The flags are also lit at night.
The sponsorship money pays for a weatherproof “medallion” that attaches to the pole with the flag. When the flags are removed, the sponsor keeps the medallion. Anyone can sponsor a flag, and as many flags as they want. Rotary is a 501c3, so your sponsorship is tax-deductible. One hundred percent of the funds that are leftover after the medallion is paid for, go back to the Fuquay-Varina community.
