The Willow Spring High School Wind Ensemble gained national recognition April 16–17 as one of only eight ensembles in the country selected to perform at the prestigious President’s Cup National Concert Band Invitational, held at the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts in Manassas, Virginia.
Widely regarded as the premier concert band festival in the United States, the President’s Cup Invitational brings together top high school music programs alongside distinguished military musicians and renowned clinicians. The event offers a unique experience that combines high-level performance with world-class instruction. This year’s invitational held additional significance as part of the nation’s ongoing 250th anniversary celebration.
Participation in the President’s Cup is by application and invitation only, making the Wind Ensemble’s selection a notable achievement for both the students and the school’s music program. Throughout the two-day event, ensemble members participated in workshops, rehearsals, and performances led by musicians from the nation’s premier military bands.
Two Willow Spring High School seniors — clarinetist Chris Cole and euphonium player Ethan Guard — were further honored with the opportunity to perform “Revolutionary” alongside The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”
“It was one of my proudest performances so far in my career,” said Kevin Still, Willow Spring High School band director. “Watching our students rise to this level and represent our school on a national stage was truly special.”
The Wind Ensemble’s participation highlights the strength of Willow Spring High School’s music program and underscores the dedication, discipline, and talent of its student musicians.
